“I don’t want to go do something I know how to do. I want to go do something I don’t know how to do.” Sheila Hicks, whose diverse approach to textiles put her at the center of the burgeoning Fiber Art movement of the 1960s and ‘70s, has spent the last six decades turning thread into true works of art. Captivated by structure, form, and color, she looks to weaving cultures across the globe to shape her work at varying scales, from small hand-woven works and wall hangings to sculptural fiber piles. At a time when tapestry was flat, framed, and largely made by men, she made fiber stand up on its own.
